Getting to Waiuta Retreat Fraser Island
From the Riverheads Barge/Ferry to Kingfisher Bay
Disembark at Kingfisher Bay Jetty.
Follow the main road leading away from the jetty.
At the roundabout:
Turn left and head uphill via James Cook Drive.
Turn right onto Kingfisher Heights Drive.
Important: Do not continue downhill past this turn.
Proceed along Kingfisher Heights Drive, and you’ll find Waiuta Retreat as the last house on the right.
From Overland/Inland
Approach the Kingfisher Bay Resort:
Drive down the hill, passing the service station and convenience store.
At the roundabout:
Turn right to head uphill on James Cook Drive.
Turn right into Kingfisher Heights Drive.
Avoid continuing down the main road past this intersection.
Continue along Kingfisher Heights Drive until you reach Waiuta Retreat, the last house on the right.
Barge/Ferry crossing
Once you have secured your booking at Waiuta Retreat you should book your barge journey from Riverheads at https://www.sealink.com.au/kgari-fraser-island/ and from Rainbow Beach at https://mantarayfraserislandbarge.com.au
Tip: You do not need a 4WD to drive within the Kingfisher Bay Resort area or reach Waiuta Retreat. However, exploring other parts of Fraser Island (K’gari) does require a 4WD vehicle.

Getting here is easy. Do You Need a 4WD
No 4WD is needed to reach Waiuta Retreat
~ 2WD access via River Heads barge/ferry to Kingfisher Bay Resort. You can drive around the Resort in a standard vehicle.
4WD is required to explore the island beyond Kingfisher Bay.
~ 4WD is required if travelling outside the Kingfisher Bay Resort precinct (e.g. 75 Mile Beach, Lake McKenzie) or via the Rainbow Beach ferry.
Tip: Riverheads barge/ferry is the easiest option, no tides to navigate, you unpack the car, get settled, and then go exploring at your leisure.
